Show 1078 Thursday 2 July
Watch today’s show at YouTube or BlipTV.
Hi, I’m Sarah, welcome to The Daily English Show.
Today we’re studying a video called: What is a browser?
Do you know what a browser is?
In this video, a guy from Google asked people in the street questions about browsers.
For example:
What is a browser?
Do you what the difference is between a search engine and a browser?
And: What browser do you use?
Could you answer all those questions?
I have a feeling most of you watching this probably could. But how about if you went into the street where you live(d) and asked random people? Do you think they’d know what a browser is?
In the town where I live, I would say probably over 50% wouldn’t know … maybe even eighty or ninety percent.
In this video, most of the people that this guy asked in New York didn’t know. And it’s quite funny seeing people try and answer a question that they don’t know the answer to.
Some people were actually right, but they don’t sound very confident, like these people:
I assume a browser is the way to get on, but, ah, no, I don’t know much.
The big e with the explorer on it. I’m not a computer guy, I might be the wrong one for this.
And some other people have the wrong answer but they sound so confident, like this guy:
I use Google. Google predominates the market obviously, but occasionally I like to go to Yahoo just to get in some business.
And my favourite part of the video is after he asks a guy why he uses Firefox and the guy answers: My friend came over to my house and erased all my other browsers and installed it and said, “You’re using this now.”
STICK NEWS
Kia ora in Stick News today police in Spain have arrested a man who they suspect hired a hit man to kill his boss in an attempt to avoid losing his job.
A man in Spain was about to lose his job because of restructuring at the company he worked for.

Word of the Day
Today’s word is browser.
So, what is a browser?
If someone asked me in the street I would probably say: It’s the thing you use to get on the internet, like Explorer or Firefox.
But let’s check some more sophisticated explanations.
The Concise Oxford Dictionary says: a program with a graphical user interface for displaying HTML files, used to navigate the World Wide Web.
And the first sentence of the Wikipedia page says: A web browser is a software application for retrieving, presenting, and traversing information resources on the World Wide Web.
conversations with sarah
#684 What browser do you use?
Step 1: Repeat June’s lines.
Step 2: Read June’s lines and talk to Sarah.
June What browser do you use?
Sarah Firefox.
June Why?
Sarah Peer pressure, basically.
June What do you mean, peer pressure?
Sarah Well, people who looked at my computer were like, “Oh, you use Explorer!” So finally I was like, “OK fine, I’ll change to Firefox.”
June Is it better?
Sarah Um … it’s been a while since I’ve changed now so I can’t really remember what Explorer was like. But yeah, I think it might do some stuff that Explorer can’t do. I don’t know, you should ask someone else.
What Is A Browser?
Hey this is Scott from Google and we’re here in Times Square, New York, to find out what is a browser.
A website that you can search on, I think.
I call it a search engine. That’s what I call it. A browser.
What is a browser?
Um …
A browser is a search engine. It’s a search engine.
It’s where I search through, like, to find things.
It’s where you put your search terms. Correct?
What is a browser?
Google. What else?
Ah, a browser’s what you use to look at internet web pages.
What is a browser? I use Yahoo. No, is that not a browser?
Do you what the difference is between a search engine and a browser?
Well, not exactly, I mean, no.
I don’t know, I guess the internet is where you, you know, find anything and I guess you browse the same way. Hell, I don’t know.
A browser is when you know what you’re looking for and a search engine is when you’re searching for something.
I assume a browser is the way to get on, but, ah, no I don’t know much.
So do you know what the difference is between Google and your browser?
Um, no, not really.
What browser do you use?
I use, ah, Firefox.
What made you switch to Firefox?
My friend came over to my house and erased all my other browsers and installed it and said you’re using this now.
What browser do you guys use?
Google.
The AOL we go, ah, through broadband.
The big e with the explorer on it. I’m not a computer guy, I might be the wrong one for this.
What browser do you like to use?
We use Google.
I use Google. Google predominates the market obviously, but occasionally I like to go to Yahoo just to get in some business.
Yeah, I use internet explorer and mostly Firefox.
Oh, ah, is that … your internet browser, uh … help!
Have you heard of Google’s browser, Chrome?
No, I haven’t. No.
C-h-r-o-m-e? No.
What is that?
Crown?
No, I have not.
Have you heard of Google’s Chrome browser?
No, should I use it?
Have you heard of Google’s Chrome browser?
Chrome browser? Uh-uh, no way.
