#1076 Elizabeth Taylor, Lawn Mower Thief, I’m Afraid, Are You Rich?

Show 1076 Tuesday 30 June
Watch today’s show at YouTube or BlipTV.

Hi, I’m Sarah, welcome to The Daily English Show.

Today we’re studying a scene from a movie called The Last Time I Saw Paris.

This movie came out in 1954 and stars Elizabeth Taylor.

Have you heard of Elizabeth Taylor?

In Wikipedia it says she is an English-born American actress. Known for her acting skills and beauty, as well as her Hollywood lifestyle, including many marriages, Taylor is considered one of the great actresses of Hollywood's golden years, as well as a larger-than-life celebrity.

It says she has been married 8 times to seven men – one of them she married twice - and she’s now 77.

The start of this movie, The Last Time I Saw Paris, takes place in Paris at the end of World War Two and a journalist called Charles meets a woman called Helen at a party and she happens to be the same woman who he kissed earlier when they were celebrating in the street.

And Charles and Helen are sitting on some stairs at this party and she asks him: Are you rich?
And he says: No. Does that finish me off?

He means: Does that destroy my chances of being with you?

And she says: No, but it does slow us up a little. We’re not rich either, we just live that way. Daddy says it’s the same thing only it’s much cheaper.

So she’s basically saying that she’s looking for a rich husband.

To slow sth/sb up means: to go or to make sth/sb go at a slower speed or to be less active.

To slow sth/sb down means the same thing as to slow sth/sb up.

For example: The car slowed down as it approached the lights.
If we have to do it manually it will really slow us up.

Are you rich?
No. Does that finish me off?
No, but it does slow us up a little. We’re not rich either, we just live that way. Daddy says it’s the same thing only it’s much cheaper.

STICK NEWS

Kia ora in Stick News today a thief in Germany has been arrested after he tried to sell a lawn mower to the man he stole it from.

In February a 46-year-old man in Germany stole a lawn mower from a shed.
Then he decided to sell it on eBay.
But when a potential buyer came to inspect the mower he recognized it as his own.
The owner of the mower contacted the police and the lawn mower thief was arrested.

And that was Stick News for Tuesday the 30th of June.

Word of the Day

Today’s word is afraid.

In the scene we’re studying today, a man and a woman are sitting on some stairs talking and then another man (the woman’s father) interrupts them.

He says: Dear, I’m afraid I’ve underestimated the alcoholic capacity of our guests.

Do you know what I’m afraid means?

Afraid means scared … so if you say, I’m afraid of the dark it means I’m scared of the dark.

But I’m afraid is also an idiom to politely express regret or apology. It means something like I’m sorry or unfortunately.

For example, if you work in a shop and a customer asks you: Do you sell brand X dishwashing liquid – and you don’t – you could say: No, I’m afraid not. Which means: No, I’m sorry, we don’t.

Dear, I’m afraid I’ve underestimated the alcoholic capacity of our guests.

Step 1: Repeat Charles' + James' lines.
Step 2: Read Charles' + James' lines and talk to Helen.

Helen Are you rich?

Charles No. Does that finish me off?

Helen No, but it does slow us up a little. We’re not rich either, we just live that way. Daddy says it’s the same thing only it’s much cheaper.

Charles I think I like him.

Helen That’s good, because he’ll try to borrow money from you and I don’t want to him to be disappointed. I like the way you kiss.

Charles Really?

James Dear, I’m afraid I’ve underestimated the alcoholic capacity of our guests.

#1075 Stick News Special Report

Show 1075 Monday 29 June
Watch today’s show at YouTube or BlipTV.

Kia ora, this is Stick News.

In our top story today we bring you the latest news on the allegations of corruption at the Kutchan Tax Office. Sarah has more.

Thank you Sarah. I’m here at the Kutchan Tax Office where it has been alleged that several top officials are involved in corruption. We’ve just heard that the police may be investigating the case. However at this point in time we can not confirm weather or not they will in fact be investigating the case, and indeed whether or not the alleged corruption occurred in this tax office. We’ve been hearing reports this morning that there may have been no corruption or that the alleged corruption may have occurred at another tax office.
Reporting live from the Kutchan Tax Office this is Sarah for Stick News.

Thank you Sarah. In our next story, police are expected to lay charges against a suspect who was arrested earlier today and taken to the Kutchan Police Station.
Sarah joins us live from the Kutchan Police Station.

We're reporting live from in front of the Kutchan Police Station where just moments ago we saw several officers in uniform entering the building. We cannot confirm whether or not those officers are connected to this case. But they did appear to be walking at an increased speed which may be an indication of how seriously the police are treating this case. So far the police haven’t been willing to release any information related to today’s arrest. But it’s expected that they will be making a statement later on this afternoon.

We now cross live to Sarah who is at the Kutchan City Office which is now the centre of allegations of officials misusing taxpayer money.

Yes, that’s right, I’m here live on the scene at the Kutchan City Office. We’ve been here since 9 o’clock this morning. And we’ve seen people coming and going from the building throughout the day. As yet we don’t have any confirmation as to what significance that has but we’ll be updating you as the day progresses with any new information as it becomes available.

Sarah, have there been any statements from officials yet?

No, Sarah, in terms of official statements, there have been none as yet. Throughout the day, discussions have been going on behind closed doors. We did manage to talk to one person who was entering the building. However he refused to answer any of our questions. Which really does beg the question: going forward can we realistically be cautiously optimistic? There are just so many unanswered questions relating to these allegations, that it really does remain to be seen.

To sports news now and Sarah is live at the field where tomorrow’s game will take place.

That’s right, I’m standing on the very field where the two teams will be battling it out tomorrow.
Make no mistake about it, this is always a tough place to play and at this point in the competition, there are no easy games. Both teams will be looking to capitalize on their opponents. They’ll need to step up to the next level, turn it up a notch, suck it up, dig deep, stay hungry and pull out all the stops.

To weather now and we cross live to Sarah. What’s the weather like out there Sarah?
If you’re heading out tonight, don’t forget your brolly because it’s expected to rain later on this evening. Wind is also forecast. And there’s 3.2% chance we’ll see light snowfalls overnight as well. So it’s a mixed bag tonight. As for tomorrow, it’s going to be a sunny one. Hot and humid weather is expected. Tomorrow’s high is 35 and the low is minus three.

And that was Stick News for Monday the 29th of June.
Kia ora.

#1072 Shakatak, South Korean English City, Bones, Flower Festival, Money Slang

Show 1072 Friday 26 June
Watch today’s show at YouTube or BlipTV.

Hi, I’m Sarah, welcome to The Daily English Show.

I thought we’d have a look at some songs by Shakatak today because they’re going to be playing at the music festival here in Kutchan next month.

Shakatak is a British jazz-funk band – it says in Wikipedia – and they were founded in 1980.

One of their popular songs is called: Down on the Street. That came out in 1984.

And here are some of the lyrics:

Tonight's the night we've waited for
The time to sing and dance like never before
The street's alive with such a carnival air
An all-night dancing party everywhere

So, those lyrics are pretty easy to understand. I don’t think they need any explanation. It’s just about having a good time.

Another one of their songs that I like is called: Easier Said Than Done

It goes like this:

Say I don't miss you every day
Don't need you anyway
You can take your love away
Oh, but it's easier said than done

Easier said than done is an idiom.

It means that something is much more difficult to actually do than to talk about.
For example, if you’re unemployed and someone says: Why don’t you get a job? You could say: Well I’d like to … but it’s easier said than done.

(So ... it’s about the difficulty of getting over a relationship.)

STICK NEWS

Kia ora in Stick News today an English-education city is being built on an island in South Korea.

According to news reports the education city is tentatively titled: The Jeju Global Education City. Twelve schools will be built where instruction will be almost entirely in English. The city will also include residences, hospitals and other living facilities and native English speakers will be hired to work in the shops. Last week a "ground breaking" ceremony was held at the site and construction of the city is scheduled to take four years.

And that was Stick News for Friday 26th of June.

Word of the Day

Today’s word is bones.

I was watching an episode of Wine Library TV recently – that’s an online show - and it was a special Father’s Day episode and the host Gary Vaynerchuk had his father as a guest on the show. And his father was saying how he didn’t like it how Gary uses the word bones.

Bones is slang for dollars and Gary always uses it when he’s talking about how much the wines cost.

This wine is about 5 or 6 bones.

But Gary’s dad doesn’t like the word because bones, as you know, also means the stuff inside your body. It was a pretty funny episode.

Personally, I don’t use the word bones for dollars. I usually say bucks. How about you? What do you think of the word bones?

#1071 Grammar Police, Illegally Downloading Songs, Predicate

Show 1071 Thursday 25 June
Watch today’s show at YouTube or BlipTV.

Hi, I’m Sarah, welcome to The Daily English Show.

Today we’re studying a video called Grammar Police by an American comedy duo called Smosh.

Have you heard of the grammar police? Of course there’s no such thing as the actual grammar police – but it’s an expression that people use when someone objects to having their grammar corrected - or someone else’s grammar corrected.

I think the situation they show at the start of that video is a pretty typical situation where that expression might be used.

So, in the video, some guys are writing stuff on a forum or something on the internet. And one guy writes, and says: Oh my god guys, have you heard the new Linkin Park CD yet? There sooo good now.

And then another guy says: You mean they’re so good now. You said the wrong there dumbass.

And then the first guy replies: Oh, no, why don’t you call the grammar police then, douche nozzle.

And what he means is: Who cares if I used the wrong word? And you’re a loser – or a douche nozzle – for pointing it out.

But in this video, there are some actual grammar police that appear. And you’ll have to watch the video to find out what happens.

STICK NEWS

Kia ora in Stick News today an American woman has been fined almost 2 million dollars for illegally downloading 24 songs.

A 32-year-old woman was taken to court for downloading 24 songs from the internet without paying for them. According to CNN the songs she downloaded included songs by No Doubt, Linkin Park, Gloria Estefan and Sheryl Crow and had a price tag of 99 cents each. A jury found the woman guilty and she was fined 1.9 million dollars. Her lawyer said she was shocked at the fine and planned to appeal.

And that was Stick News for Thursday the 25th of June.
Kia ora.

Word of the Day

Today’s word is predicate.

A predicate is: the part of a sentence or clause containing a verb and stating something about the subject. For example: went home in John went home.

In the video (the) Grammar Police, one of the officers listens to his favourite song, which is called The Predicate Rap and it goes like this: A predicate is one of the two main parts of the sentence, the other being the subject, which the predicate modifies.

#679 What the hell do you want?

Step 1: Repeat Timmy’s lines.
Step 2: Read Timmy’s lines and talk to Sergeant.

Timmy What the hell do you want?

Sergeant Are you Timmy Blumpkin?

Timmy Yeah, so what?

Sergeant I’m Sergeant Anous with the grammar police. I need to have a word with you. Step outside.

Timmy Is this some kind of joke? Screw off, douche nozzle.

Sergeant You think this is some kind of joke? Huh?

Timmy You police don’t got nothin’ on me.

Sergeant Oh, I don’t have anything on you, do I? I have records showing that you said the wrong there – OK look at me – you said the wrong there in a forum. You should have used t-h-e-y-apostrophe-r-e. It’s a contraction for they are. Got it?

Timmy I don’t have to deal with this. Mum!

Oh my god guys have you heard the new Linkin Park CD yet? There sooo good now.
You mean they’re so good now. You said the wrong there dumb arse.
Oh, no, why don’t you call the grammar police then, douche nozzle.

Yeah, I’ve been with the grammar police for about, ah, ten years now. Ah, before that I was in the, I was in the normal police and you know I, I left because I thought I could do more good to today’s youth by teaching them about good grammar, so, yeah.

Seargant Anous, we have a report of bad grammar use on a farm at 323 Birchwood Street.

All right. Roger that.

Yeah, you got to be really careful around these kind of people. They’re, ah, they’re very unpredictable.

What the hell do you want?
Are you Timmy Blumpkin?
Yeah, so what?
I’m Sergeant Anous with the grammar police. I need to have a word with you. Step outside.
Is this some kind of joke? Screw off, douche nozzle.
You think this is some kind of joke? Huh?
You police don’t got nothin’ on me.
Oh, I don’t have anything on you, do I? I have records showing that you said the wrong there – OK look at me – you said the wrong there in a forum. You should have used t-h-e-y-apostrophe-r-e. It’s a contraction for they are. Got it?
I don’t have to deal with this. Mum! There’s some creep arse …

With some taser, tasing you!
Punk arse kid, better learn your grammar next time.

Timmy? Is there something wrong?

Guys, let’s get out of here.

The main reason why I joined the grammar police is cause when I was growing up, my friends used to always make fun of my superior knowledge of the English language and call me grammar nazi. So I was like, “Hey why not join the grammar police and make some money being a grammar nazi, you know. And, ah, I also get to use this cool little taser here.

This is what I said, “The cat hurt its paws”. I-t-apostrophe-s.
No, no, you are wrong, Jerry. There is no apostrophe. It is i-t-s.
Oh, oh, yeah, did you not pass the third grade.

She’s right.
Did you not pass the third grade? It’s i-t-apostrophe-s, it’s possessive.
For example, my wife’s brain is stupider than mine. True and correct sentence.
If you guys don’t shut up …
If you don’t shut up I’m going to punch you in the face.
You are wrong! There is no apostrophe.

Oh my god, Jerry …
That was completely excessive, I want your badge number you jerk.
The only thing you’re going to see is my taser!

Sergeant Faraday to HQ. Domestic grammar dispute has been resolved.

Yeah, I just received word that somebody might be selling cheat sheets to this week’s grammar test in the back of the school. So I’m going to go and check that out right …
Oh, oh, this is my favourite song, it’s called The Predicate Rap.

A predicate is one of the two main parts of a sentence, the other being the subject, which the predicate modifies. For the simple sentence, John Yellow …

Yes, hello, who are you?
I’m the school principal, thank you for coming so quickly, Sergeant Anus, is it?

It’s Anous, but, ah, show me these …

The cheat sheet dealer is there, right under the tree.
All right, let’s go get him guys.

Hey, you, freeze! Grammar police! Hey!

What’s in here? Huh?
Nothing!
Nothing? Are there cheat sheets in here perhaps? Somewhere in here? No?
No! Nothing!
What’s this? Huh? What is this?
It’s a, it’s a grocery list. I’m buying hotdogs.
Oh, is it? Is it? We’ll find out. It’s definitely a cheat sheet.
So what?
So what?! Do you have any idea what kind of damage this could do to a kid? He could go his whole life not knowing the difference between a demonstrative adjective and an attributive adjective. Do you want that on your hands? Do you? Do you?
Dude, I don’t care.
Do you want to be tased bro? You want to be tased?
What the hell! It’s not working.
You’re letting him get away Sergeant Anous, what are you going to do?
I’ve got my back up. Right here. Come on guys.
Stop right there, or I’ll shoot.
What does it matter? Oh, what’s the matter? Does it hurt too much? It doesn’t hurt that bad. Watch, I’ll shoot myself.
Waaaaa!

#1070 Need A Hand? ESL Printables, Fukuoka Fire, Ignoramuses, Perez Punched

Show 1063 Wednesday 17 June
Watch today’s show at YouTube or BlipTV.

Hi, I’m Sarah, welcome to The Daily English Show.

Today’s mistake comes from a diary entry that I read on lang-8.
A person called M is writing about how she enjoys studying English but that it’s difficult.
And she writes: Please give me your hand.

Do you know what’s wrong with that?

It should be: Please give me a hand.

Why?
Well, to give someone a hand is an idiom which means to help someone.
But the a doesn’t change. You don’t say: Can I give you my hand? Or: Do you mind giving me a bit of your hand?

It’s always a hand.

Do you need a hand?
Can I give you a hand?
Do you mind giving me a hand for a sec?

Of course, if you’re meaning something else, you can say your hand.
For example if you want to read somebody’s palm you could say: Give me your hand.

Today I’d like to recommend a site for teachers called ESL Printables.
I’ve only just started using it, but I think the way it works is a really good idea.
It’s for sharing ESL worksheets and you can download worksheets for free, but only if you share worksheets that you’ve made.
So how it works is, you upload a worksheet that you’ve made and then each time someone else downloads it you get a point and then you can use those points to download other worksheets. I think it’s an interesting concept and I’ve been using some really good worksheets that I found there too.

STICK NEWS

Kia ora in Stick News today several people have been injured in a beer garden in Japan after they tried to put out a fire by pouring alcohol on it.

On Sunday night a group of people were having a few drinks in a beer garden on the roof of a building in Fukuoka.
For some reason, the gas cartridge stove on their table burst into flames.
Someone tried to put the flames out by pouring alcohol over the fire.
According to news reports the flames then got bigger and the gas cartridge exploded.
5 or 6 people were treated for minor injuries.

And that was Stick News for Wednesday the 24th of June.
Kia ora.

Word of the Day

Today’s word is ignoramus.

An ignoramus is an ignorant or stupid person.

This is usually used in a humorous way. The example here is: When it comes to music, I’m a complete ignoramus.

The other day I saw a clip from the TV show Britain’s Got Talent and there was a couple performing and the audience didn’t seem to like it and they were booing. But one of the judges really liked it and he said: I thoroughly enjoyed it and I’m just sorry you were drowned out by the ignoramuses in the audience who just weren’t feeling it like I was.

Sarah He’s a gossip blogger.

Jim Oh, OK. Who punched him?

Sarah A musician’s manager apparently.

Jim What happened?

Sarah Apparently the musician was complaining about stuff that Perez had written. And then Perez insulted him and then the manager punched Perez.

Jim I guess it’s not surprising that people get angry if he writes nasty stuff about people all the time.

Sarah Yeah, but still, you shouldn’t punch someone, no matter what they say, unless you’re in a dojo or boxing ring of course.

#1069 Eat Out Of My Hand, iPod Saves Girl From Lightning, Quarrel

Show 1069 Tuesday 23 June
Watch today’s show at YouTube or BlipTV.

Hi, I’m Sarah, welcome to The Daily English Show.

Today we’re studying another scene from The Little Princess.

In this scene a girl is talking to a man after he’s just been talking to another man.

And she says: Maybe you're fond of him but I don't think he's very fond of you.

If you’re fond of somebody, it means you like them.
Personally I never use this word, it sounds kind of old-fashioned to me.

It says here: fond of sb, feeling affection for sb, especially sb you have known for a long time.

And the man says: Oh, he's harmless. His bark's worse than his bite.

This is an idiom. If somebody’s bark is worse than their bite it means that they’re not really as angry or as mean as they sound.

I guess this idiom comes from dogs – because some dogs bark really loudly but they’re not actually likely to attack you. Or if they do, they couldn’t cause much damage.

Another idiom in this scene is: to eat out of sb’s hand.
You can hear this three times.
The man says: What he really wants is to have me come begging to him for help. He'd be eating out of my hand if I would.
And then the girl says: I don't think I’d care to have him eating out of my hand.
And then the man says: How would you like to have me eating out of your hand?

This idiom means: to trust somebody and to be willing to do what they say.

I think this is another idiom that comes from animals. If an animal like a horse, eats out of your hand then they must trust you and they’re probably willing to do what you want them to do.

STICK NEWS

Kia ora in Stick News today a girl in England survived a lightning strike thanks to her iPod.

A 14-year-old English girl was going for a walk with her boyfriend when a storm struck.
They stopped to shelter under a tree. Then a lightning bolt struck them and knocked them both unconscious.
The boy came round first and carried the girl to a nearby road where he flagged down a motorist who took the couple to a hospital.
According to news reports, the girl suffered burns to her body and legs but survived because she was wearing an iPod.
Apparently, the lightning travelled through the gadget’s wire, diverting it away from her vital organs.

And that was Stick News for Tuesday the 23rd of June.
Kia ora.

Word of the Day

Today’s word is quarrel.

It says here that a quarrel is: an angry argument or disagreement.

The man in today’s conversation says: I was mixed up in their quarrel.

Quarrel is another word that I never use, it sounds old-fashioned to me. But it might be common in some parts of the word, I’m not sure.

I usually say fight or argument.

Step 2: Read Sara’s lines and talk to Goeffrey.

Sara Maybe you're fond of him but I don't think he's very fond of you.

Goeffrey Oh, he's harmless. His bark's worse than his bite.

Sara I should hope so. Why is he so mad at you?

Goeffrey Oh, he isn't really. He was angry with my father. I was mixed up in their quarrel. What he really wants is to have me come begging to him for help. He'd be eating out of my hand if I would.

Sara I don't think I’d care to have him eating out of my hand.

Goeffrey How would you like to have me eating out of your hand?

Sara You? Well, that would be different.

Goeffrey Well, I shall, if you'll do me a favor. A very important one.

Sara Oh, could I?

Goeffrey I've got an idea that you're the only one in the world who could.

Hi, I’m Sarah, welcome to The Daily English Show.

Today’s guest is Hiro. Hiro manages a hotel here in Niseko and he also owns a guiding company.
And he’s on the organizing committee for the Kutchan Music Festival which is on next month.
We went to that festival last year – show 831 is the story of last year’s festival if you want to check it out. It used to be called a jazz festival … but it’s now a music festival. It’s called the Hanazono Kutchan Music Festival. And we’re going again this year. It’s on the 25th and 26th of July … so hopefully I’ll see you there if you live in Hokkaido. Otherwise you can wait for the video.

Hiro is originally from a place called Bibai in Hokkaido, but he now lives in Kutchan. I asked him how long he’s been living here.

About five years. So I moved from Sapporo city to here, Kutchan town, about 5 years ago. So, with my family. So, this town, Kutchan town, is my wife’s hometown. And, so, after I got a baby, my daughter. And, so, yeah, we have … all family moved from Sapporo to here. And, so, ah, my wife’s parents live in Kutchan town. And, so they very helpful to look after, ah, my ba- … my daughter.

with Yukihiro Takahashi (Hiro)

Step 1: Repeat Sarah’s lines.
Step 2: Read Sarah’s lines and talk to Hiro.

Sarah How many people are on the committee of the music festival?

Hiro We have about ten members of music festival committee. But it is enough number. Ah, but, ah, we have many volunteer staff. Just, ano, (Japanese for “well”) event day, each event days, we have two days event. So each day we have, last year 40 volunteer staff and ten, ano, ah, committee staff.

Sarah How many years have you been on the committee?

Hiro I worked for them, just only two years. This year and also last year. But, ah, this, ah, Hanazono Kutchan Music Festival, so, last year, not music festival, so last year, ano, ah, Kutchan, we called Kutchan Jazz Festival. So we changed the concept from jazz festival to music festival.

Sarah What do you think the highlight of last year’s festival was?

Hiro Last year’s highlight was … yeah, first day was Ryudo Uzaki, a Japanese musician. He’s not only jazz musician. He’s very famous artist. He had lots of big hit songs in Japan. Two years, ah, twenty years ago, thirty years ago … He’s a hit maker. He’s a hit maker. And also he like blues mu- blues guitar. And he invited a very good blues guitarist, so it was a really awesome play.
And, ah, next day, Sunday, so, we could invite, ah, Roy Ayers from America. So their performance was also really, really good. So, it was … audience were probably 1300. So, all standing up and … and also they could change air te iu kana (Japanese for “Is that how you say it?”) So … it was really mmm.

Sarah What did you learn from helping organize the festival last year?

Hiro So, yeah, I didn’t focus on to contact musician. So I organize restaurant space, and, ah, not only restaurant space, all space and, ah, so also it, ah … I’m really interesting to organize big, ah, music event for example Fuji Rock Festival in Niigata and also Rising Sun Rock Festival in Sapporo area. That … audience is, ah, more than 100,000 people. So, ah, Kutchan Jazz Festival was really small event. Only 1000 or something, 2000, something. But, ah, we need a really good scenario to get sponsorship and also … it’s like a dream, my, ano, target is 100,000. Next ten … ah, five years.

Sarah Which acts are you most looking forward to seeing this year?

Hiro Oh, yes, my recommendation is, ah, Ryukyudisko. Ryukyu means, ah, you know, ah, Okinawa, they come from Okinawa. I think they are, my, my image is they will be, I think, ah, second popular, second big name, second kana (Japanese), second biggest name in techno DJ and also their performance really cool.

Sarah Have you seen them before?

Hiro Oh, yes, so, at Rising Sun Rock Festival and Fuji Rock Festival. Awesome. More than ten thousand people … uwaaa. (Mmm cool.) And also Shakatak ne (Japanese for "eh"). So Saturday, Shakatak. They from, ah, England. So my generation, is, ah, we have good memory, ne (Japanese).

Sarah How did you learn English?

Hiro English, ah, I love listening to rock music. English song. So, and, ah, that was my motivation, so from, ah, ten years old. But, ah, I didn’t focus to study English, not so much, so, because many people, ah, my friends, many friends moved from Japan to foreign country, but I didn’t. So, but, last five years, so … this Niseko happening, made, ah, so, more … very good motivation learning, to learn, English again and, ah, I focused to study English again … and my client is also, mo (Japanese), my clients, 90 percent of my clients use English. Business, speaking, guiding, yeah it’s ah … yeah, I’m enjoying.

#1066 Rafting In Niseko Spring 2009 With UKKA

Show 1066 Saturday 20 June
Watch today’s show at YouTube or BlipTV.

Last month I went rafting for the first time.
I went on two trips with a local company called UKKA.

The first trip was on Tuesday the 5th of May.
This is me putting a dry suit on.
And posing for a photo.
Our guides gave us a few instructions as we were driving to the starting point.

Today there’s going to be four of you in the boat.
Your guide is Nozo, who is driving now.
Hello!
And I’m going to be going down the river in a kayak.
If anyone falls out of the boat and floats down the river
I’ll row over to them and …
cheer them on.

When we got to the starting point we unloaded the boat.
The guides made sure we had our life jackets on properly.
And we got some safety instructions.

Knf filmed us from the riverbank.

This river is called Shribetsugawa. May is the most exciting time to go rafting because all the snow is melting. It’s really cold when your head goes under or the water splashes in your face.

The second trip was on Saturday the 9th of May.

This time knf came on the boat with us.

Chihiro was our guide and Nozo rode in the kayak and took photos.

It was a lot of fun.

#1065 Stand By Me, Human Billboard, Shed, Cellphone Cleaner, -umble

Show 1065 Friday 19 June
Watch today’s show at YouTube or BlipTV.

Hi, I’m Sarah, welcome to The Daily English Show.

Today we’re studying a song called Stand by Me.

The original version of this song is by Ben King and it was released in 1961. And since then it’s been covered many times.

So, what does it mean to stand by somebody?
Well, if you stand next to somebody, then you’re standing by them.
But stand by somebody also means this: To help sb or be friends with them, even in difficult situations.

When the night has come, and the land is dark And the moon is the only light we’ll see No, I won't be afraid, oh, I won't be afraid Just as long as you stand, stand by me

As long as is an idiom which means provided that, it’s like if.

In this song, the singer is saying that no matter what scary or terrible or difficult thing happens, I’ll be OK as long as you’re here to support me or help me.

If the sky that we look upon should tumble and fall Or the mountain should crumble to the sea

Tumble is a way of falling.
to fall suddenly and in a dramatic way

And crumble means to break into very small pieces.

STICK NEWS

Kia ora in Stick News today a man in New Zealand decided to advertise his website by dangling from a fence for almost 5 hours.

A guy called Dan owns a job search website called Perk Jobs. On Saturday he promoted the site by becoming a human billboard. He wore a harness and was suspended from a wire fence next to a roundabout in Wellington. Dan said he got plenty of waves and toots and a bit of a wedgie.

And that was Stick News for Friday 19th of June.
Kia ora.

Word of the Day

Today’s word is shed.

When you cry you shed tears.

A line in the song Stand by Me goes: I won't cry, I won't cry, no, I won't shed a tear

Animals also shed their skin.
And plants shed leaves.
