#995 Obamas Elf, Hanami, Obscure, Boomerang, Mondegreens

Show 995 Friday 13 March
Watch today’s show at YouTube or BlipTV.

Hi, I’m Sarah, welcome to The Daily English Show.

Today we’re studying a song called: All by Myself.
It was written by Eric Carmen and it came out in 1975.

It goes like this:

When I was young
I never needed anyone
And making love was just for fun
Those days are gone

Living alone
I think of all the friends I’ve known
But when I dial the telephone
Nobody’s home

It’s pretty sad really.

And then the chorus goes:

All by myself
Don’t wanna be
All by myself anymore

And the reason why I’m talking about this song is because of a video I saw recently which I think is hilarious. The joke in the video is that all by myself sounds like Obama’s elf. Well it doesn’t really when I say it – but it does when he’s singing it … especially with the animation. It’s really funny. You have to go and see it if you haven’t already.

STICK NEWS

Kia ora in Stick News today the cherry blossoms have started blossoming in Fukuoka.

Every spring in Japan the Meteorological Agency and the public track the cherry-blossom front as it moves from Okinawa to Hokkaido.
The trees have started blossoming in Fukuoka 13 days earlier than the average and 11 days earlier than last year.

And that was Stick News for Friday 13th of March.
Kia ora.

TDES Niseko Snow Report
in Niseko Annupuri

Annupuri is the only ski field in Niseko where the snow is groomed before night skiing starts.
These snow groomers are called Pisten Bullys.
I think they look very cute … like three machine friends going for a walk together and having a chat.

Word of the Day

Today’s word is obscure.

Obscure means not well known or difficult to understand.

For example: For some obscure reason, he failed to turn up.

This is from today’s song:

Hard to be sure
Sometimes I feel so insecure
And love so distant and obscure
Remains the cure

Hi Sarah,
Jarek is doing graphics now and he's restoring our archives. What do you think about our new logo? If you don't like it he will change it. That's his message for you. He also added that he had painted the town red and that's why he is ashamed now :).
Cheers,
