#960 Micka Etheridge, Bongs + Cornflakes, Notch, Waitangi Day

Show 960 Friday 5 February
Watch today’s show at YouTube or BlipTV.

Hi, I’m Sarah, welcome to The Daily English Show.

There’s a musician coming to perform here in Niseko soon. His name is Micka Etheridge. Well, I’m not sure if that’s how you pronounce his name, but I guess I’ll find out soon.
Anyway, I’ve been listening to his music on his MySpace page – and I love it.
I would describe it as sounding pretty relaxing and kind of like Jack Johnson. But that’s probably because I’m not very good at describing music. On his MySpace page he put it under folk, dub and powerpop. So that’s probably a better description.

I thought we’d study one of his songs today. It’s called: Baby Get Down Tonight.

Firstly, what does get down mean? If you’re standing on a box or a stage and someone wants you to get off – they might say: get down. If you climb up a tree and then have trouble getting down, you might say: I can’t get down! Or: How do I get down?

Get down is also slang.
I looked it up on Urban Dictionary and one of the definitions says it means: to party, to have sex and to dance.

You might know the song by KC & The Sunshine Band called Get Down Tonight.

It goes:

Do a little dance Make a little love Get down tonight

I don’t really know what Micka’s song means, but you can have a listen and read the lyrics and see what you think it means. It seems to be describing kind of snapshots of a circus event.

Clowns on pogo sticks
Dogs performing magic tricks
The lion roars at the pickup truck

He spins the wheel to try his luck

Crystal balls and a deck of cards

The joker yawns and smokes cigars

The old man looks at his pocket watch

Tightens up his belt a notch

The plastic horse on the carousel
Up and down like a cheap motel

STICK NEWS

Kia Ora in Stick News today an American swimmer has lost one of his sponsors after a newspaper published a photo of him smoking from a bong.

Michael Phelps is a 23-year-old American swimmer.
At last year’s Olympic Games he won eight gold medals and now holds the record for the most gold medals won at a single Olympics.
According to Wikipedia, his size 14 feet provide the effect of flippers; and his hypermobile ankles enable him to whip his feet as if they were fins for maximum thrust through the water.
On the first day of February a trashy British newspaper published a photo of Michael Phelps smoking a bong.
His marketing agency released this statement: I engaged in behavior which was regrettable and demonstrated bad judgment.
One of his sponsors, Kellogg’s, has now dropped him.
A spokesperson said: Michael’s most recent behavior is not consistent with the image of Kellogg.

And that was Stick News for Friday the 6th of February.
Kia Ora.

Word of the Day

Today’s word is notch.

Here are some lines from today’s song:
Well the old man looks at his pocket watch Tightens up his belt a notch His eyes are red from concentrating

This is a notch. This belt has many, many notches.

A notch is also a level on a scale.
For example: The quality of food here has dropped a notch recently.

And top-notch is an informal word for excellent.

* I got today's joke from here.

What’s red and smells like blue paint?
Red paint.

conversations with sarah
#602 What does that mean?

Step 1: Repeat Jim’s lines.
Step 2: Read Jim’s lines and talk to Sarah.

Sarah Today’s Waitangi Day.

Jim What does that mean?

Sarah It’s kind of like New Zealand’s national day.

Jim So people celebrate?

Sarah Not really.

Jim Why not?

Sarah It’s kind of complicated because of New Zealand’s history of colonialism.

Jim So what do people do?

Sarah Some people have political protests and most people just have a day off. I’ve heard people in London celebrate it though.

Jim Why in London?

Sarah I don’t know. Maybe they’re homesick or something.
