#957 A Superhero Stalker, Ski Instructing, More Political Shoe Throwing

Show 957 Tuesday 2nd February
Watch today’s show at YouTube or BlipTV.

Hi, I’m Sarah, welcome to The Daily English Show.
Today we’re studying another scene from the movie Spider-Man. In this scene Mary Jane and Spider-Man kiss when he is hanging upside down. He has just saved her.

And he says: You have a knack for getting in trouble.
And she says: You have a knack for saving my life.

If you have a knack for something it means you’re good at it. So you have a special skill or an ability to do something.

I had a look for some examples online and I found that people or things that had a knack for many things, like:

numbers
nursing

knitting

making masks

uncovering country stars on the rise
and: mattering in recount-tight races

STICK NEWS

Kia Ora in Stick News today a man in England threw a shoe at the Premier of the People's Republic of China.

Last year a man in Iraq threw his shoes at George Bush during a press conference. Now, another shoe has been thrown at a leader – this time in England. The Chinese Premier was giving a speech at the University of Cambridge when a man started shouting at him. He called him a dictator, then threw a shoe at him. The shoe missed the target.

And that was Stick News for Tuesday the 3rd of February.
Kia Ora.

What did you have to do to become an instructor?
I actually took a, a gap year course, and, um, with a company over, over actually in Switzerland. And that’s quite a common thing to do these days. A lot of companies … people, you know, maybe in between finishing university and then embarking on another career or something, will often do a gap year. And part of that you get your, um, sort of, level one instructors. So I took that, ah, qualification. And that’s where I found the work in Switzerland as well.

So it’s a series of tests?
It’s basically … ah, there’s two parts. I’m doing what’s called the PSIA. Which is the American, ah, association. And the exam forms two parts. One is looking at your personal skiing. And so they’ll look at how you … ah, if you’re able to make short turns on fairly easy terrain. And they’re very, ah, focused on how your demos are. And the level one is actually for people, ah, to instruct people from beginner level to, sort of, ah, intermediate level. And, so the other part of the exam is, is, teaching and you have to take, you’ll, you’ll take a class for maybe twenty minutes and have to give them, you know, go through the, go thorough the steps of what we call the stepping stones which are the ah, the parts of teaching to get you from snowplough until matching parallel.

Word of the Day

Today’s word is stalk.

This is a stalk.

Stalk is also a verb:
to illegally follow and watch sb over a long period of time, in a way that is annoying or frightening

A person who does that is called a stalker.

In today’s conversation, Mary Jane says to Spider-Man: I think I have a superhero stalker. And she’s clearly joking, because she doesn’t think he’s annoying or frightening.
