Show 696 Tuesday 8 April

Watch today’s show at YouTube or BlipTV.

Hi, I’m Sarah, welcome to The Daily English Show.

Today we’re going to look at a scene from a movie called Thelma & Louise which came out in 1991.
I love this movie. And apart from being a good movie in general ... it also has Brad Pitt in it – in a very nice role. His line “I like your wife” Is probably one of my favourite Brad Pitt moments – that and in True Romance when he asks someone to buy some cleaning products.

(Brad Pitt says "I like your wife" here from 1:56).

Wikipedia says the plot of this movie: revolves around Thelma and Louise's escape from their troubled home lives, as they embark upon a lengthy road trip across America.

At the start of the movie the two women decide to go on a two day trip ... but then things start to go wrong and they “change from victims of circumstance into outlaw heroines of the road”.

The scene we’re going to do is just after Thelma has robbed a shop - like a convenience store or something – and Louise is driving really fast and Thelma says:

Hey Louise, better slow down, which means: Hey Louise, you’d better slow down.
This is a good example of how to use: had better.

I looked up how to use had better on a few English study sites and this is what it says on englishpage.com:

Had better is most commonly used to make recommendations. It can also be used to express desperate hope as well as warn people.

And this is what it says on englishgrammarsecrets.com:

When we use had better there is a suggestion that if the advice is not followed, that something bad will happen.

For example: I'd better get back to work or my boss will be angry with me.

And that applies to this case, in the movie. If she doesn’t slow down, then they might get a speeding ticket.
So you can follow the links on the blog if you want to learn more about had better.

STICK NEWS

Kia Ora, in Stick News today an Australian man and his daughter have admitted to an incestuous relationship.

Wikipedia says incest is defined as sexual intercourse or any form of sexual activity between closely related persons, especially within the immediate family.
In most countries incest is a cultural taboo.
Recently this couple appeared on an Australian TV program called 60 minutes.
John is 61 and Jenny is 39. They are father and daughter and they are also partners.
John left Jenny’s mother when she was a baby.
They told 60 Minutes that they fell in love in the year 2000 when they "discovered each other later in life."
In 2001 they had a baby. It died of a heart condition.
Nine months ago they had another baby.
They now live as a family with two children from Jenny’s former marriage.
Last month a judge banned the couple from having sex.

And that was Stick News for Tuesday the 8th of April.

Word Of The Day

Today’s word is calling.

Calling is a noun which means: a strong desire or feeling of duty to do a particular job, especially one in which you help other people.

You often hear people say things like: I’ve found my calling or I think I’ve found my calling, which means they’ve found something that they really want to do.

I did a search for “found my calling” and a found this blog entry:

I had my clinical again today, and I did an ER observation. I've decided I LOVE THE ER!!!! I think I've found my calling!

ER means emergency room. And I guess this person is a medical student and they’ve decided they really want to work in ER.

And in the movie scene we’re doing today, Louise says to Thelma after she does the robbery: You think you've found your calling?

conversations with sarah
#425 You think you've found your calling?

Watch this conversation here from 3:12.

Step 1: Repeat Louise’s lines.
Step 2: Read Louise’s lines and talk to Thelma.

Thelma Hey Louise, better slow down. I'll just die if we get caught over a speeding ticket.

Louise You know, for the first time in my life, I wish this car wasn't green.

Thelma Are you sure we should be driving like this? I mean, in broad daylight and everything?

Louise No, we shouldn't, but I want to put some distance between us and the scene of our last goddamn crime!

Thelma Woooo. Oh man, you wouldn’t have believed it. It was like I'd been doin' it all my life! I mean, nobody would believe it.

Louise You think you've found your calling?

Thelma Maybe. Maybe. The call of the wild!

Louise You are disturbed.

Thelma Yep. I believe I am.
