Show 469 Wednesday 15 August

Watch today’s show at YouTube or BlipTV.

Hi, I’m Sarah. Welcome to The Daily English Show.

Today’s mistake is from Japanese. In Japanese you can say ライブに行きました (raibu ni ikimashita).
The word ライブ (raibu) comes from the English live as in live performance.
So often Japanese people say in English: I went to a live.
Which is wrong.
In English, live is only an adjective or adverb.
So you can’t say: a live.
Instead you can say: I went to a gig. A gig is a performance by musicians.
Another word for a musical performance is a concert.
So you could say: I went to a concert. I would say I went to a concert if it was a big event like at a stadium.
And I would say I went to a gig if it was a band down at the local pub or bar.
Or I would say I went to see a band.

conversations with sarah
#288 Do you go to many concerts?

Step 1: Repeat Thomas’s lines.
Step 2: Read Thomas’s lines and talk to Sarah.

Thomas Do you go to many concerts?

Sarah I haven’t for a while ... I did when I was a teenager.

Thomas What did you see?

Sarah Let me see ... well ... I think the first concert I went to was New Kids on the Block.

Thomas New Kids on the Block?!

Sarah Yeah, I was a big fan.

Thomas Wow.

Sarah And ... what else? I probably shouldn’t tell you, you’ll think I have really bad taste.

Thomas Go on ...

Sarah OK, um, Tina Turner, Michael Jackson, Bryan Adams, The Eagles …

Thomas Where did you see all those?

Sarah That was in Auckland. Auckland is only about a two hour drive from where I grew up, so it was really easy to go and see overseas artists. But if you live anywhere else in New Zealand like especially in the South Island then you often have to travel a long way because sometimes they only come to Auckland.

Thomas And that’s all?

Sarah No, I went to some concerts when I was at university in Wellington too. Like, the Chilli Peppers, and the Presidents of the United States of America and Peter Andre.
