Hi, I’m Sarah. Welcome to The Daily English Show.
In Show 439, I interviewed a guy from the Nelson band Funk Republic. And on that day I saw the band practicing.
Well, on Saturday night, they had a gig – and I went and it was really good.
It was my first night out in Nelson too and I had a really good night.
It was at this bar called Spiritbar. Apparently, it has reopened recently after they did it up. It was a cool place. There were two bars – there was one place with the band – and another place with a dj and a pool table.
And one of the greatest things was they didn’t seem to have a dress code – half the people there seemed to be wearing jandals or these plastic shoes with holes in them that everyone has in Canada. And shorts.
I don’t think I’ve ever been to a place like that before – that looks like a club but half of the people are really casual. It was very cool.
STICK NEWS
Kia Ora, in Stick News today, Japanese police are finally taking action against a crazy driver after a video of his driving was posted on YouTube.
Last October, two men were driving in Tokyo when, for no apparent reason a car next to them started dangerously swerving, then crashed into them and sped off.
The driver happened to have a camera on the dashboard – and the incident – including a clear view of the offender’s number plate – was recorded.
Right after the accident, he took the tape to the police.
Four days later, police contacted the crazy driver – but they didn’t arrest him.
He said he had lent his car to someone. But his phone was now broken so he had no way of contacting the person he lent the car to.
The police thought that was the end of the story.
But the guy with the video evidence wasn’t happy.
After six months of no action from the police, he wrote about the incident on his blog.
Two months later, in June 2007, he uploaded his video evidence to YouTube.
Since then, the video has been viewed over a hundred thousand times. In the comments, people have expressed their anger at the crazy driving, disgust at the lack of action from police and appreciation to the person who uploaded the video. People also left comments with the name and work place of the offender.
Following this, his work place received many calls from people angry about the man’s driving and he lost his job.
Last month the story was picked up by some Japanese TV programs, and now finally, police seem to be working on the case.
And that was Stick News for Thursday 2 August.
Kia Ora.
