Show 1079 Friday 3 July
Watch today’s show at YouTube.
Hi, I’m Sarah, welcome to The Daily English Show.
Today I thought we’d study a song by Michael Jackson.
Like millions of his fans around the world, I was really sad when I found out that he died last week. He had so many brilliant songs, but I thought this one would be a good one to study today: Gone Too Soon.
This song is off the album Dangerous which is the album that is closest to my heart because it came out in 1991, just after my 13th birthday and I loved it and I bought the cassette and I listened to it thousands of times. So the songs off that album really bring back memories for me.

Apparently Michael Jackson wrote this song for a young boy called Ryan White who died of AIDS in 1990.
I think it’s a beautiful song. It’s full of descriptions of things which don’t last long enough, things which are gone too soon.

Splendid is an adjective which means: magnificent, very impressive or excellent.
The adverb is splendidly.
This is from the song Gone Too Soon:
Shiny and sparkly And splendidly bright Here one day Gone one night
friday joke
A woman is taking a bath when there is a knock at the door.
“Who is it?" she asks.
"The blind man.”
The woman says, “come in”, knowing that the man won't be able to see her.
The man enters and says, "Nice Tits! Which window needed the new blinds?"
conversations with sarah
#686 When was that?
Step 1: Repeat Marvin’s lines.
Step 2: Read Marvin’s lines and talk to Sarah.
Marvin Are you a big Michael Jackson fan?
Sarah Yeah, I am. I love his music – and he seemed like such a sweet person too.
Marvin He was pretty strange though, don’t you think?
Sarah Yeah, he was unusual … but he seemed like nice person to me, trying to do positive things in the world. He didn’t seem to look after his heath though, which is sad …
He came to New Zealand once actually.
Marvin When was that?
Sarah In 1996.
Marvin Did you see him?
Sarah Yeah, I did. I remember queuing for tickets in the rain and being so happy when I got them because they sold out really quickly.
Marvin What was the concert like?
Sarah It was great. The only thing I thought was kinda weird was that he didn’t say anything except, I love you. And he said it many times like this, “I love you.”
